Female Officer Files Sexual Discrimination Lawsuit Against City

By Sarah Pierce

City of Grosse Pointe(LEGAFI) -- The only female officer at a Detroit-area public safety department has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit against the city of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, claiming male officers harassed her with pornographic videos and inappropriate comments. She claims the city not only did nothing to protect her after she complained about the harassment, but also retaliated against her when she reported the discrimination to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Lisa Ann Monticciolo alleges in the lawsuit she is a victim of sex discrimination and harassment and the city violated the state’s Whistleblower’s Protection Act by retaliating against her for reporting the alleged conduct. Monticciolo has been with the Grosse Pointe Public Safety Department since 1996 and was once Officer of the Year.

Monticciolo alleges in the sexual discrimination lawsuit that she objected to being shown pornographic videos at work but was told by coworkers that she works in a man’s world and to “Get used to it.” She also alleges that a sergeant expressed a sexual fantasy to her that involved her engaging in a lesbian encounter with a woman who was a complainant in a criminal matter.

When Monticciolo reported the offensive behavior to the EEOC, she claims officials retaliated against her by passing her over for promotion to detective.

She is asking the court for more than $50,000 in compensatory and exemplary damages for the value of past and future lost wages and benefits. She is also asking that she be put “in the position she would have held had there been no discrimination” and for an injunction prohibiting further acts of discrimination.
