Female Offshore Cook Sues Sodexo for Gender Discrimination

By Sarah Pierce

Sodexo(LEGAFI) -- A female offshore cook has filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against her former employer Sodexo Remote Sites Partnership, who she says fired her shortly after she complained about unfair treatment at the company.

Penny M. Stewart alleges in the Sodexo discrimination lawsuit that roughly two years after she began her employment at Sodexo as an executive steward in November 2008, she filed a complaint with the company regarding gender discrimination.

Stewart says immediately after filing the complaint the company began retaliating against her by sending her to training concerning analyzing personalities. She claims this training was not necessary and was only imposed on her as a punishment for her complaining about experiencing gender discrimination at the company.

Five months later, Stewart filed an EEOC complaint alleging that a male co-worker, who was also an executive steward, was being paid more. She also alleged in the complaint that she was suffering retaliation because of her prior complaint of gender discrimination. By the end of May, Stewart says she was told she would not be assigned any more jobs and was effectively terminated.

Steward sued Sodexo on October 14 in New Orleans federal court.

Stewart is asking the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting Sodexo from continuing their unlawful discrimination practices and for an award of back pay, interest, bonuses, pension, lost benefits, front pay, pain and suffering, emotional distress, mental anguish, loss of reputation, embarrassment, humiliation, punitive damages, costs and attorney’s fees.

The Sodexo gender discrimination lawsuit is Case No. 11-cv-02596.
